Macmillan Information Service Launch in Rothesay

Today was the soft launch day of the new Macmillan Information Service in Rothesay Library here on Isle of Bute.

We have a corner of the local library and a very nice set up with lots of leaflets and volunteers are there once a week to chat to anyone who wants some information about cancer.

Its is something that I think is desperately needed here on the island and I hope that the community will use the service.

Myself and the other 5 volunteers have gelled into a nice little group over recent months as we did our training before Xmas and have been eagerly awaiting the time when we can start. We go "live" so to speak next week. The service is available every day that the library is open and volunteers will be there every Tuesday.

It was nice to meet some of the Macmillan staff from the area office and have a chat about the service Macmillan provides.

So roll on next Tuesday when we can down to business.

Where do the days go???

Doesn't seem 5 minutes since Xmas and yet here we are at 1st March. Happy St David's Day to all the lovely welsh people out there!

Well, I know that I promised that I would be writing here a bit more regularly this year but I really don't know where the days go to!!
I do write quite a bit but it always seems to be for other blogs - either my own for Womb Cancer Support UK, the online support group I run http://wombcanceruk.blogspot.co.uk/ or occasional blog posts I do for Beauty Despite Cancer a wonderful website set up by a very lovely lady called Jennifer Young who developed a range of skincare and cosmetics specifically for cancer patients.

The past few months have been quite difficult for me personally as I lost my Mom to a very rare and aggressive form of cancer, Cholangiocarcinoma or bile duct cancer, just before Xmas.

In her memory I am running an online auction in March to raise funds for the only UK Cholangiocarcinoma charity AMMF You can find details of the auction here https://www.facebook.com/events/1402314750026909/ There is also a justgiving page if anyone would like to support this great charity http://www.justgiving.com/Kaz-Molloy2

If anyone would be prepared to donate an item to the auction then please message me via the FB event page. It would be much appreciated.

Loosing Mom has been very difficult but I am trying hard not to let my feelings of loss drag me back down into depression. It's not a very nice place to be, as anyone who has experienced it will know.

So I am trying hard to get out of the house a bit more and next week sees the launch of the new Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Service in our local library here on the island. I am one of 6 volunteers who will be part of the service and I am looking forward to starting.

If you have recently lost someone or are still coming to terms with a bereavement then you might like to know about a new twitter hour that is on Wed March 19th between 7pm-8pm. Use the hashtag  # and support each other through the tough times.

Right, I'm off for a cuppa. Catch you all soon, I promise!! xxx

Happy New Year

I know its a bit late, but Happy New Year to you all.

Doesn't seem like 2 weeks since the turn of the year but it is.

If you remember in my last post, I was organising a Xmas craft fayre here on the island; and although sadly it wasn't very well attended, I did manage to raise £50 for Macmillan, and the local Macmillan fundraising group raised £80 on their home baking stall so all in all, it was a good day for Macmillan.

My craft clear out is ongoing and I have raised almost £100 from that and I also had a Boxing Day sale on my Facebook page which raised another £73. :-)

The new Macmillan Information Service will soon be starting in our local library here in Rothesay. Myself and the other volunteers had another brief meeting today to catch up after Xmas. Looks like we might be ready to roll at the beginning of March. I am really looking forward to this and think it will be a service that will be welcomed by the local community and well used.

Not much else has been happening here - everything seems to shut down during the winter!

The weather has been the only thing that seems to have got much attention. Its been extremely windy and with the winter high tides, we have had quite a lot of flooding in town and low lying areas of the island. It has also been extremely mild for the time of year which is fine by me as it keeps the heating bills down!!

Destash Time again!

Anyone who knows me knows that I have a thing about beads!!! Can't resist nice shiny beads, especially handmade ones!

Trouble is, living in a small flat means that space is at a premium so I've had to have a good clear out and sell off a lot of my jewellery making stuff!!

I've set up a new page on Facebook in order to sell off my stash https://www.facebook.com/WombCancerResearch and as with all my sales, proceeds go to Macmillan Cancer Support. Have managed to sell quite a bit of stuff and have raised about £50 but to be honest you can hardly see where I've been!

Never mind, it's forced me to have a good tidy up and a clear out of some of the stuff  that's been hanging about for a while and I was never likely to get round to using!!

Even found some stuff that I thought I had already got rid of and some more that I had mislaid and been looking for for ages!!

Am also getting ready for a Fayre that I am organising on 21st Dec here on the island. Lots of stalls full of handmade and homemade goodies - knitwear, jewellery, tablet, fudge, candles, soaps, artwork,  home baking and lots of other goodies.

Hopefully it will be a good afternoon and be well attended.

If you are coming along, then pop over and say hello!

Hello Again!

Must really apologise for not writing here for such a long time. Things have been so busy elsewhere and I just haven't thought about writing on this blog to be honest.

Most of my time is taken up with my work for Womb Cancer Support UK, the group I set up to help other women going through womb cancer. It has grown far beyond what I had imagined when I set it up back in April 2011 and takes up a far amount of my time but it's something worthwhile and through doing that I have met some wonderfully inspiring ladies.

You can follow that blog here http://wombcanceruk.blogspot.co.uk/

If you followed my other blog http://buteartism.blogspot.co.uk/ then you will know that I raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support by making and selling jewellery and other handmade items.
That is still on going and I have raised over £1000 since I started and its something that I will continue to do.

I've decided to resurrect this blog because I am about to start working with Macmillan Cancer Support as a volunteer in a new information and support service that is being launched here on Bute. (For any of you that don't know, I live on a lovely island off the west coast of Scotland called Bute!)
The service is being launched at the end of January and for the past 4 weeks a small group of us have been attending a training session 1 day a week.

I intend to use the blog to chart the progress of the new service and see how it develops over the coming months once it is up and running.

I believe that the service is much needed here on the island as there is very little cancer support and information available. We do have a lovely cancer support group run by Cancer Support Scotland and a wonderful Macmillan nurse called Morag but it was felt (and its something that I have felt for some time aswell) that there needed to be somewhere that people could just come to that was in a neutral setting where they could access information without necessarily having to talk to anyone.
Although there will be the volunteers there 1 day a week for people to talk to if they wish, the service will be available throughout the week whenever the library is open for people to browse through the leaflets.

I'm quite looking forward to the service being launched and hope that it will prove successful and be well used.

As well as all this, I am still raising funds for Macmillan. Last year I started selling my Angels of Hope https://www.facebook.com/pages/Angels-of-Hope/490513110981929?fref=ts and sales of these have themselves raised over £300 so far.

My other fundraising activity for Macmillan continues to be  https://www.facebook.com/buteartism?fref=ts and I also sell items on the island at the occasional craft sale. All proceeds go direct to Macmillan and so far the total stands at just over £1,000.

So, I am looking forward to what the New Year brings and I hope that you will join me in my journey.

See you again soon.

One Billion Rising

Well, we did it!

On Thursday 14th Feb a small group of ladies, and a couple of lovely men, gathered in the town square here on Isle of Bute and joined 1 billion other women and men around the world to call for an end to violence and abuse towards women.

One Billion Risng was a global wake up call to the staggering number of women that are raped or are victims of abuse and violence every day on this planet.

Around the world, women came together. Fron Afghanistan to Zimbabwe and everywhere inbetween!

Our little gathering took place in the pouring rain; we huddled together near the bus shelter. We didn't dance unfortunately but we joined in spirit with the many other women who did.

Due to the bad weather we cut our event short and myself and a friend who works for the local Rape Crisis Centre went along to our local internet radio station and did an interview.

All in all, it was a successful day. If my health had been better, I would have organised a much bigger event - maybe next year!!!

Here is the link to a short video I made of our event - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIacVfIOPwg

24 hours to go!

Well, less than 24 hours to go until the world rises as part of One Billion Rising!
http://onebillionrising.org/

I have been watching some amazing video's over the past few weeks from around the world so I thought I'd have a go at making one of my own to let everyone know that Bute is taking part in the global event. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DR0vv3hGm5o&feature=youtu.be

Check it out and please share it, and as many other videos that you come across about OBR. Let the whole world know what is going on!!

Woke up this morning to a good covering of snow - the first we've had this winter! I just hope that its gone by tomorrow!!!

I hope you are rising tomorrow!
